We provide gender affirming care for residents of Nova Scotia who are 17 and above.
FREE SERVICES
Hormone therapy helps align physical traits with gender identity. Common treatments include estrogen and anti-androgens (e.g, spironolactone or cyproterone) for feminizing changes, and testosterone for masculinizing changes. Other medications such as progesterone and finasteride are commonly prescribed.
We teach our patients how to safely self-administer hormones like estrogen or testosterone. Training covers proper technique, dosage calculations, selecting injection sites, and managing side effects or complications.
Referrals for gender affirming surgeries including counselling about the surgeries themselves. This includes a discussion of the details of surgeries, risks, and benefits. Examples of gender affirming surgeries covered by public funding include breast augmentation, chest masculinization, vaginoplasty, metoidioplasty and phalloplasty. As part of the surgical referral process, our clinic also offers pre-operative psycho-social assessments (also known as ‘letters of readiness’)
In many regions, including Nova Scotia, the government requires a psycho-social assessment as part of an application to MSI, the provincial insurance body. Our clinic staff will conduct these assessments and assist patients with government applications as this is the first step in the surgical referral process.
Supporting the mental health of our patients is a key part of gender affirming care. We refer patients to appropriate services in the community, and we treat various mental health conditions for trans and gender diverse patients in a safe and supportive environment. This includes treatment for common mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, ADHD and others.
Sexual health is another key aspect of gender affirming care. We provide STI testing, cervical cancer screening (pap tests), contraception/family planning counselling, PrEP, and sexual health concerns that may be related to gender affirming care medications (e.g., genital dryness, reduced libido). We also counsel patients regarding fertility and offer referrals to reproductive health specialists.
